Welcome To Villa Pakuk
Ibu Ketut will be expecting you. Her number is: +62 819 99983033. Her english is pretty good and she is a super super human. She will be able to help you out with all sorts of things.
About the house:
The house was commissioned in 2015 and finished in August 2017. It is in pretty good shape, but as with all new builds - especially Bali builds, there are problems. Please accept our apologies and let us know if anything is wrong. It will be fixed.
The address is:
Gang 37
37C Jalan Tanah Barak,
Canggu.
Google map ref: https://goo.gl/maps/KQK3gpcwbsx
Staff:
We have 1 full time staff at Villa Pakuk. Ibu (Mrs) Ketut. Whatsapp +62 819 9998303. Ketut will work from 9-4 Monday to Friday and from 9 to 11 on Saturday - and maybe longer if you are desperate. She is an amazing person and her english is good. On Saturday afternoon and Sunday Ibu Wayan will be able to help out - although she will be looking after 2 villas, so might not be as attentive as a full time staff. Feel free to ask Ketut to help you out or recommend or organise things or tours or drivers.
Tipping:
Tipping is super appreciated by anyone in any country. If you feel the staff have done a good job then a couple of dollars from you means a lot for them. As a guide I say $2-$4 per person per day is appreciated but this is not at all obligatory and is only a guide.
Laundry:
Ketut will change towels 2 times per week unless they need more. Please ask her if they need changing. Sheets are 1 times per week unless you would like fresh ones. Other Laundry - Ketut will do your laundry once she has cleaned the house. Please be a little patient or you can ask her to send the clothes to the laundry with a little cash and they will come back the next day.
Shopping:
Please ask Ketut what you might need from the supermarket and she can do the shopping for you. (please keep in mind that she will be coming back on her motorbike, so things like cases of beer are better off ordered and delivered.) Fruit is amazing and milk and basics are all available locally. We have a newly opened supermarket in Canggu which is very western and you can get most things you need there.
Cooking:
Between them, Ketut and Wayan cook pretty well. Basic western breakfasts (fruit and pancakes etc are easy.) We are now also doing come Canggu classics - Smashed Avo with seeds and eggs on sourdough etc.
If you need something special from the supermarket then please do let Ketut know, give her some cash and she will grab it for you.
Daily use of the Villa
Most things are pretty self evident. A couple of things might be a bit more challenging to figure out how to use it.
The black house doors near the pool:
The doors are pretty cool to look at…. But take a bit of fiddling to close. The doors will fit and the best advice would be to work from left to right as you are looking at the pool. Close the left one, bolt it, then move to the next door. By day 3 you will have it!
Music:
We have a sonos system, which is amazing… once you install the Sonos App. (apple: https://itunes.apple.com/au/app/sonos-controller/id293523031?mt=8) Once you install the App you should have access to all sorts of music on the web or on your phone. It will play through the house and is pretty easy to work out.
TV:
We have a TV and a chromecast. We use netflix or whatever streaming software to play what is on our computer onto the TV.
Coffee Machine:
Ketut makes pretty good coffee… or you could try making it yourself. The machine is scheduled to turn on during the day and off at night. Have a practice or check Youtube for instructions: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zzycK1_cYE4
The grinder - is set up: 1 person coffee (1 spout group handle). Press the 1 button on the grinder and then insert the grouphead. For a double shot - use the double spout group handle. Press the 2 button on the grinder, insert the handle into the grinder. Tamp. Press the 3 button on the grinder… tamp again… then use.
Daily life
We are on the fringe between heavy development and local life. 2 of your neighbours are local villages whose ancestors have been here forever. The other 2 will be from developed nations with very different budgets, tastes and customs.
The ceremonial and religious part of daily life is pretty amazing and it pays to travel quietly when ceremonies are happening.
Roosters - are a part of daily life. They have no internal clocks and will start crowing very early. Bring earplugs if you think it will help. Otherwise enjoy nature or ask Ketut to buy you a set of disposables.
Communication
Get an indo SIM card. (Telkcomsel works well). Available either near The Garden Early Learning or on Batu Bolong near the police station. It will cost 100k (about $10) and give you a heap of data and phone calls. Makes getting around so easy. Just open google maps, put in your headphones and away you go!
Transport
We use scooters to get everywhere. Please ask Ketut for a number of a supplier or we can organise. They are about IDR60k per day. Check all the lights and brakes before you agree to rent it... just to be sure.
Ketut can also organise taxis and transport.
Taxi - the local taxis have a mafia like hold on the taxi industry. They will come if called. Mostly. +62 812-3990-1550 or +62 361 8690555
Go-Jek. (local Uber). They work pretty well but are afraid to come and pick you up at the villa due to the mafia above. Feel free to try, and definitely use them around Seminyak and to come back to Canggu. This is a motorbike service
Blue Bird Taxis. Like uber etc. If you get one then insist on using the meter.
Airport pickups and dropoffs. We can organise these. It will cost about 250k - 300k to and from the airport. 1 hour should be enough time... but more if you are going during rush hour or Friday and Saturday night.
FOOD
The development in the area is fast moving and by the time I finish typing this sentence a new restaurant would have opened! But our favourites are - in order of time of day:
Breakfast
Crate - great food, great value. Opens early (6am). The crowds and instababes will be there by 8 making it pretty crowded.
Shady Shack - more relaxed version of Crate (and without the meat)
Veda - world class breakfasts served without pretense
Warung El Passo. Go the back way via Perenenan and it is a great drive and adventure and then you can eat without the crowds overlooking the rice fields.
Monsuir Spoon - very very good croissants and good bread too.
Lunch
As above… but you could also include
Moana - Fish restaurant - our favourite casual restaurant in Bali - eat in or take away.
Motion Cafe - Very healthy. You will feel like an angel after eating here.
Sundowners - a very important part of the day.
Finns - everyone knows this place.
The Lawn - nicer than Finns - a little more intimate.
La Brisa - just down on Echo Beach. Great place - sort of rustic cool.
The Naked Coconut - a warung on the beach. Super Casual. Great vibe with locals and westerners hanging out. Especially Sunday. On the beach north of Finns.
Sandbar - beers on beanbags on the beach. Not fancy, but close.
Dinner - in ascending order of cost...but they are all good value.
Japanese - in a warung on Echo Beach. Just north of Sandbar. It is pretty good and you probably won't get Bali Belly
Fish on Echo Beach - they have a monopoly, but it is pretty good grilled fish. The furthest South is your best bet.
Dandelion - Indonesian food - done well. Still cheap. Look for the bunnies playing between your feet.
La Baracca or Fabrica - Pizza and Italian. Both amazing. Both within 3 minutes walk.
La Calita - good mexican and spicy margaritas
My Warung - Go for the steak if you crave one - it is legitimately good. Very casual. Not sure about the rest of the food....
Ji - Japanese near Batu Bolong. Classy, quiet and a great view.
One Eyed Jack. Super Japanese near Berawa.
Seminyak... well Tripadvisor would be your best bet, but we love MamaSan.
Surf Guides
We can organise this. I would highly highly recommend getting a lesson for a beginner / intermediate and a guide for intermediate or above. You will catch waves that you would not have a chance to do as a new visitor to Bali. Windu is my favourite guy. Speaks amazing english, is fun and super smart. A good guy to be around. +62 822 37765115
